Roadie Safe Travel Tips

  1. Always tether dog with an independently tested harness that is to human seatbelt standards.
  2. Never tether dog by the collar as this will choke the dog.
  3. Never put the dog in front seat especially with passenger air bag on. (Air bag may be turned off by dealer).
  4. Safest place for your dog is center back seat.
  5. The RR Roadie can be used in the rear space of an SUV or van or anyplace where there is no existing seatbelt system.  In this case the harness should attach to the metal cargo ties with a carabineer of at least 24KN strength.  These can be purchased at most outdoor supply stores.
  6. Carabineer also attaches to the floor bars in vans when seats are removed.
  7. Never put your dog in back of a pick-up truck under any circumstances. If the truck rolls you cannot protect the animal.
  8. Always keep your dog on lead in rest areas. (Roadie is a full time harness with a built in short walking lead).
  9. In an accident, emergency personnel cannot help you with an untethered dog in the car that may be confused and try to protect you.  If your dog interferes with life saving efforts he may be shot.  When the dog is harnessed, he can be restrained or removed from the vehicle.

DOGS ARE NOT SAFE IN CRATES:

  1. Crates are not made to auto safety standards.  Under extreme over loads, crates open up.
  2. The dog may hit the side of the crate then fly freely into the car or out of it.
  3. If the crate does not open and break, the dog is a marble in a tin can and could suffer injury or death in the crate.
  4. The metal mesh cargo dividers will keep the dog in the rear compartment but offer the dog no protection from injury.

SEAT BELT STANDARDS:

The human seatbelt standard for Tensile strength, in the USA, set by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) IS 5,000 lbs.  In Europe, Tensile strength is 7,000 lbs.  Roadie complies with both standards.
